What is restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry repairs teeth that are decayed, cracked, worn, or missing — using fillings, crowns, and bridges to bring back strength, function, and a natural look.

A crown caps and protects a damaged tooth; a bridge fills the gap from a missing tooth using the teeth on either side; a filling repairs a cavity. When a tooth is missing and you'd rather not involve the neighboring teeth, we'll talk about dental implants or dentures instead.

When you might need restorative care

Restorative work is some of the most common dentistry we do — quietly keeping teeth functional for decades. You may need it if you have:

  • A cavity that needs a filling
  • A cracked, chipped, or worn-down tooth
  • A large old filling that's failing
  • A tooth that's had a root canal and needs a crown
  • One or more missing teeth to bridge
  • Sensitivity or pain when chewing

We'll always recommend the most conservative option that restores the tooth properly — and explain why.

Tooth-colored fillings

Composite fillings repair decay and blend with your natural tooth — no silver, usually done in a single visit.

Restorative questions, answered

What patients ask us most.

How long does a crown last?

With good home care and regular checkups, a well-made crown often lasts 10–15 years or more. The tooth underneath still needs brushing, flossing, and routine exams to stay healthy.

Crown, bridge, or implant — which is right for a missing tooth?

A bridge uses the neighboring teeth for support; an implant replaces the tooth root without touching them. We'll walk through the trade-offs in cost, longevity, and bone health so you can choose what fits.

Are tooth-colored fillings as strong as silver ones?

For most everyday cavities, modern composite fillings are strong, bond directly to the tooth, and look far more natural. For very large repairs we may recommend a crown instead.

Will my insurance cover it?

Most restorative care — fillings, crowns, and bridges — is at least partially covered. We file your claim for you and give you a written estimate of any out-of-pocket cost before we begin.
