What is preventive dental care?

Preventive care is the routine cleanings, exams, and x-rays that keep your mouth healthy and catch problems early — when they're smaller, simpler, and less expensive to treat.

For most patients that means a visit about every six months. It's the single best thing you can do for your long-term dental health, and most insurance plans cover it in full — which makes it the easiest visit on the calendar to keep.

What a typical visit includes

Most check-ups take under an hour and usually include:

  • Professional cleaning — plaque & tartar removal
  • Comprehensive exam — teeth, gums, bite & soft tissues
  • Digital x-rays as needed
  • Polishing and a fluoride treatment
  • Oral-cancer screening
  • A conversation about anything you've noticed

Been a while? No judgment — just a calm, thorough exam and a clear, no-pressure plan to get back on track.

Routine-care questions, answered

What patients ask us most.

How often should I have a cleaning?

Most people do well with a cleaning and exam every six months. If you're prone to gum issues, we may suggest a more frequent schedule — we'll tailor it to you.

Are dental x-rays safe?

Yes. We use digital x-rays, which use very low radiation, and only take them when they'll add useful information about your teeth and bone.

What if it's been years since my last visit?

You're very welcome — and not judged. We'll do a calm, thorough exam and build a clear, step-by-step plan to get your mouth healthy again.

Is preventive care covered by insurance?

Most dental plans cover routine cleanings and exams in full. We file your insurance for you and let you know about anything before it's done.

"We get all four of us cleaned in one morning. The hygienists are gentle and actually take time to explain things to the kids."
